“Tell me more about Roni.” Cutter lifted his glass of wine and held it up to her in tribute. He wasn’t normally a wine drinker, but he’d been practically raised on the stuff, since his mother was big into it. He knew enough of what he liked to order it without sounding like an idiot, at least.

“They’re overseas and decided to stay with my aunt in England. They asked me to fly over, but I booked this instead. When I finally got the gumption to text my mom…” She gave a mock shudder that made him chuckle.

“Bad?”

“Oh yeah.”

“Like disowned bad?”

“Maybe not quite. But I’ll definitely be butt kissing for most of next year.”

He laughed in earnest and reached across the table for her hand. “That sounds like a fun year. Brothers and sisters over there with your parents?”

“No siblings.” She shook her head and turned her hand up to his, palm to palm. A spike of lust hit him. Or was that too high for lust? His chest felt tight.

“Honestly, I could have gone to my parents in Florida, but I couldn’t take that much time away from the ranch. I’ve got a good foreman to run things, and a few days was all I could manage. Cole invited me down, and I hate being alone on a holiday.”

“I get it.” She looked right into his eyes, and he knew she did. They were bound together by a mutual loneliness. “Even my friend seems to have found her own holiday fun. I don’t begrudge her at all, but if I weren’t here with you, I’d be wandering the city alone.”

“Watching Merry Hairy Christmas alone.”

“And Three Orange Guys. I don’t think Julia wants to go unless someone can assure her they have orange penises.”

At that, he threw his head back and let his laughter loose. God, this woman was a breath of fresh air. In his industry, he traveled a lot and met a lot of women.
